ANANTARA EASTERN MANGROVES STEPS UP ITS SUSTAINABILITY WITH DIVERSE ECO AND SOCIAL PROJECTS

Abu Dhabi – Located between city bustle and precious natural wonders, Anantara Eastern Mangroves Abu Dhabi Hotel is passionate about sustainability. Perched on the edge of one of the UAE’s most important ecological assets—protected coastal mangrove forests—the resort regularly commits to green initiatives.

The Mangrove National Park comprises 75% of the total mangrove forested area in the United Arab Emirates. It creates a natural barrier against tidal surges, purifies the water, removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and provides a home for rare wildlife. With the guidance of General Manager Mr Khaled Sharabassy, Anantara Eastern Mangroves has appointed a Green Team committee tasked with implementing various projects dedicated to preserving environmental balance.

In February 2022, the committee worked with Environmental Agency Dhabi on a mangrove clean-up campaign, mobilising a team of volunteers to remove debris from the park. The team organised a community cleaning campaign and collected over 23kg of waste from the surrounding areas.

Knowing that long-term environmental protection starts with small, smart changes, the Green Team has replaced plastic with biodegradable straws throughout the hotel and installed two universal electric charging stations to accommodate and encourage the use of electric vehicles.

Sustainability meets humanitarian support in the Caps For Keeps campaign, in which the Anantara team collected plastic bottle caps to be passed to the Tadweer Waste Management Centre, which converts the material into wheelchair parts used by health institutions in Abu Dhabi.

In recognition of its strides in sustainability, the hotel has received a number of acknowledgements, including a score of Very Satisfactory during the OSHAD Audit 2021, conducted by the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi. UNESCO have recognised the hotel with eco-certified sustainability badges on their online platforms. Anantara Eastern Mangroves has also earned the Green Growth 2050 Gold Certificate, which includes numerous CSR and sustainability indicators, and the hotel is aiming for the platinum certificate this year.
